Yes, definitely a good idea. It's very irritating being halfway through a wind, concentrating really hard so I don't lose count, and then the wife starts yelling something from the kitchen about how cute the dog is being  Angry
I have a few IC's laying around, as well as some 7 segment displays. If I have the right combination of bits and pieces I'll make a digital counter for it. I'm not sure I have a microswitch though, so the project might be on hold until I can get out to Fry's electronics.

It will be a really simple setup, and I'll probably just leave it on a breadboard rather than messing with circuit boards, soldering etc.
I'll post pics and a schematic once I get it done.

Great [clapp]Nice bit of kit. I am always interested in home built machines. Never made one meself but do own one of the first Redheats (which is seeing a LOT of interest on G.T) keep it up   chop

you might look for a counter in an old copy machine as well, I salvaged a couple mechanical ones from copiers with this task in mind.
