Certainly.

In the meantime I am working out how to wire it all up in the box. I am taking it nice and slow but keeping a steady pace. I found a very good resource today at

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

Is this the correct level of power for testing my Surf PI 1.2?

It is an AC/DC adapter which converts to 12V, 300mA

That's a shame. I found it laying around and thought it could be of use to me with this project.

In the meantime here's what I got done today:

Soldered the wire to the connector which the coil will plug into. I bought it at Jaycar . I chose this one as I believe Minelab coils use these plugs (prior to the latest release that is.)

I don't own any minelab coils so this is another "best guess".

Jack a couple of things, you show that you have connected all the spare connector pins I would have used one for the screening on the coil cable, which may or may not connect to your shielding. Also for a power supply I used Laptop batteries from a failed pack, there are 6 inside. They are 18650, I put them in a 3 way carrier and got a charger, this means I can have 3 batteries inside and 3 batteries on stand by. Kenny

Yes very astutely observed. I connected the pins so as to form only two connections as it all ends up connecting to the printed circuit board at a two pronged socket. I've wired my coil's shield to one of the end wires on the coil so this means there  are also only two connections coming from my coil cable. The idea of linking pins 1 & 5 as well as linking pins 2,3,4 was something I read on another forum based on the diagram of how minelab coils are configured.

Interesting you should mention 18650 batteries. I have several packs on the way from china. They've informed me that customs has stopped them being shipped twice already so I may end up trying your idea of getting a laptop battery.

My initial test to see if the coil was detecting anything was done using eight 1.2 volt batteries.

Now what I am a little bit stuck on at the moment is the issue of a power regulator.

My understanding is that it is advisable to have 12V 400mA regulated power.

I bought a kit from Jaycar called the"Adjustable 1.3V-22V Regulated Power Supply Kit."  on reading through the instructions though I wasn't  certain it was the right one for the job. It mentions adding a heat sink if the power is more than a certain level which just seemed like I'd be fiddling with stuff I can avoid by getting the right kit. But I can't find the right kit.

I did manage to find a " LED voltage indicator" kit and have put that together though I haven't tested and set up its voltage levels yet.

All that to say how do I make the power regulator and is 12V, 400mA correct?

So this board doesn't need any additional protection?

You should be fine keeping it at 12V.
