I honestly can't understand what the fuss is all about. Just connect a 12v battery to the thing and be done with it.

A bad day at gold prospecting or metal detecting is better than a good day at work.

That's all I wanted to know. Thanks guys.

This video suggests what I mentioned earlier about the power supply.

I just didn't know if it was important or not.

Here's an update on my progress.

I have found this project to be very challenging , but everything seems to be going ok.
It will undoubtedly become easier to put this type of thing together once I have completed this first one.

I've glued up the coil housing and installed everything.

Still waiting on the variable resistor to arrive, and the batteries.

I spent a long time looking for suitable housing for the circuit board . I had bought this box earlier but thought it might be too big. But I don't think so anymore. It would have been pretty hard to work in a smaller space.

There are two places to plug in coils: One search coil and one pin pointer. There's a switch between them. The pinpointer has a calculated inductance of 340 to 360 uH.

Next I'll have to get my head around the whole damping resistor business.

Oops. I hooked up reversed polarities.

How bad is that for the board?

I know it was stupid of me.

Hi Most of the current should have gone through the big diode, Putting a fuse in line with the power supplies a safety feature.

You are not alone in that situation Jack. I will bet that everyone on this site that has built a project, including myself, has done that. Sometimes you get lucky and you don't burn up the board. A little trick you can use that is much safer than a fuse is to include a bridge rectifier in the power input circuit. Tack solder the + output of the bridge to the plus input of the board and the - out put to the - input of the board. The two leads of the bridge go to your battery or power supply. So,  no matter which way you hook those two leads up, your board will always work. A 50 v 1A bridge is more than sufficent for most boards. It will save your butt someday

Awesome! Thanks!

The board still works so it looks like I dodged the bullet.

You need to neaten up your wiring a bit other wise when you make a more involved detector you will loose your board under all the wire and that can make all sorts of things go wrong like signal interference and it look ugly. This one I put together some time ago but I'm not happy with the way I did my wiring.

Another less expensive way is to hook a single diode in forward conducting mode to the plus input of the board. Then, if you accidentally hook the board backwards to the power source nothing happens. You can remove it once you have completed your project. If there is any chance that the batteries could be inserted backwards in a battery box, I would leave it in.
