Hi Xavier, I'm an XL and allergic to nylon so the sweater should be wool thanks. Blue, navy blue. Great
Ok, excuse my ignorance but is the coil winder for a metal detector? If so surely one could just count the coils manually? I've just received a new coil for my Fisher 1236 X2 and got the old one back and wondering if it would be worth tweaking it apart to see the problem and maybe making a repair as a spare.

Before you take cutting implements to your coil you need to know what is inside. Drop it in a bucket of water. If it floats, it's probably filled with expanding builder's foam. If it sinks, it may be filled with epoxy making it impossible to remove the cover and get to the guts without destroying it. If you have access to an X-ray facility, I suggest that you have one done to see if the coil has components in it other than the coil wire itself.

There's a lot you need to know before you can successfully rebuild a coil. Good luck.

Thanks for that GD. I remember years back when one of my CDI units packed up on an outboard motor. It had a plastic casing and was resin/rubber filled so as I started etching the stuff out the odd capacitor or diode would be scraped out. This is the Yamaha way of confusing you when one tries to make a repair.

The Navy dockyard science lab had an acid solution which cleared my problem, made the repair for nothing and I was on my way. The coil is fairly heavy so will probably be resin filled and having worked with resin for years I realise the impossible task it would be. Thanks for the reply Great

Cheers and HH

Orcaman, speaking of resin, something in my distant memory tells me that it can be softened with vinegar and etched away with a pick. The down side is that the vinegar will attack the metal parts.

Can you see if the coil wires are intact inside the connector housing? If so, the wire near the coil head itself may be broken. Usually, you can dig in a bit there and see to repair it. The end result might be ugly but the coil can be saved.

Hey there GD, thanks for that. I haven't had time to get stuck in but I will certainly try! Great (haven't had time, huh, I've been all over that site I mentioned in Prospecting so will post some odds and ends tonight).

Cheers and HH

Pretty. You should open up a small webshop for those discs. I know I would buy one(having little skills in that set as well as the lack of tools. haha) Smiley

Hi Fieldmaus

Thanks for the positive response I will be posting the rest of the winder as soon as I get all the electronics sorted out, at the moment it's all on bread board and vero board (looks like a bids nest).

All the best Xavier

Xavier,

If you have a surplus electronics outlet that you routinely use you might see if they have any 6>12 VDC gearhead motors.  They are small (about 80 X 35 mm) and in the 10 +/- RPM have lots of torque.  Mine is rated 13 RPM @ 6 VDC with a 75 mm dia. X 19 mm thick spongy rubber robot wheel running against the coil form so the actual RPM (unkwn) is slower than rated speed.  I have a homemade knee switch to control the motor so that I can stop and staighten out the turns if they go astray.  It kind'a looks like a refugee from the junk bin, one of these days I have to redo it  doesn't look so ratty.

Take care,
Dennis

Hi Dennis

Thanks for the info I will look into it but at the moment I have so many things to do that the coil winder will just have to wait for a while.

All the best
Xavier

Roger, I copy that, I still haven't got my DBP working.  I made a coil tester like GD suggested and I've got plenty of signal out, at about 18" the scope shows about a .1 of a volt, so there's plenty of power out.  Now I just have to figure out where it's going when it comes back.

TTFN,
Dennis
