You bet it is, Gramps. I've never owned anything I didn't take apart at least once.

Except an ice cream cone and I didn't own that for long.

Grin Grin Hi GD, Gramps43 and Pgill

The VLF detector is designed a bit more every time I learn something new it's functionality goes according to my learning curve it started of with a simple transmitter and receiver that would have fitted on 5cm x 5cm board and could detect a coin at 10cm now it can detect a coin at 30cm (in air test) and will fit on a board 10cm x 10cm  the good news is that it's almost like I want it.(just short of 5 or 6 cm) As for the cost of making your own detector well I don't think that it really works out much cheaper at least not the first one that you make there are a lot of schematics on the net and so far all of them that I had a look at or build had a problem with it BUT when you have one completed and working the way that you want it too then I guess that the second one will be cheaper. I must tell you that I get most of my components from broken down VCR's, radios , TV's and so on the big thing is to check these components before using them remember it stopped functioning for a reason. Look out for my new thread I will be posting a very nice way of making a mold to encapsulate coils I should be ready to post it in about five days or so.
Well I'm going completely off the topic here so to put things back on track I tried the 24v motor for the coil winder today on a 12v supply but it would not start so I'm going to have to pulse it. I will be getting some Vero board tomorrow so I will only be able to start on all that tomorrow night. Good news is that all the electronics for the coil winder is working thanks to a few mouse that served as donors (photo transistors) and a little help from my friend GD who explained to me how the little bliters worked (I had some fun with that) I should also be getting my bobbin of magnet wire in three days (that should be fun too)

All the best to all of you
Regards Xavier

Xavier,

Regarding the 24v motor, you could look around for an old HP X-Y Plotter and use their power supply. They were 24v driven. Try your local junkyard or salvage yard. Or possibly an old laptop supply that was rated for 19v. Toshiba power supplies were like that.

GD you just gave me an idea I do believe that I should have a power supply that is  17 VAC that will give 24 VDC if my calculation is correct.

Your basic tube TV set should have a 24v transformer in it. Anything with a split +/-12vdc supply would have a 24v CT transformer. Lots of low cost options.
