Go Up Go Down

I have an xs that was in the closet for years. Used it at Christmas for a couple of hours at an old home site. The battery didn't last long, figured it was just old.
Pulled it out the other day, turned it on & only got a partial screen, then it booted down. It won't do anything now, even with fresh Alkaline's in it. I had a fellow on another board trying to talk me through some steps.
I do have battery voltage to the cb, but she won't light up & no sound. The caps don't look swollen & nothing seems loose.

Try looking for a reset for the program. It may be that a simple hardware reset fixes things. If not, you might have to see about doing a memory reflash.

You kind of lost me there. I have held the power button down, hoping to reset the factory settings, but nothing. How would I perform a memory flash?

Normally a memory flash for a machine is done by plugging a USB device in which contains the bootstrap loader for the detector and following the manufacturer's instructions. Contact Minelab and tell them about your issue. They are normally very quick to help. If they recommend sending it in, that might be the fastest option if reflashing the memory doesn't help.

Hello Everyone . I have a feeling Metal Detector manufacturers already know that when certain programmable models are not turned on for a few years there will be problems . Problems caused by not keeping fully charged batteries in a Programmable Metal Detector . Similar to a cmos battery on a computer motherboard going dead , possible Bios problems . If the consumer is not told to keep batteries fully charged it is just another excuse to send it to the factory . Maybe use a low current trickle charger for long term storage . Then the next question , does the Minelab xs little on-board DSP have boot files ?

Great Subject here !!

HH............Eugene

That is a master reset, as you know. If that didn't help, you might need to reflash your unit. See my previous post here for limited information on that.

All is not lost though. These kinds of issues seem very serious but are sometimes easy to fix. Call Minelab or write to them for help.

Minelab's corporate office is near me here in Australia. Not near enough to drive over for coffee but near enough to ring them. In fact, I've done that already for a few folks so if you get stuck, post another message here and we'll see what can be done.

I just got off the phone with ML. They said the same thing they told me before. Send it in, we have very limited parts for it, if it can't be repaired, we'll send you a coupon for 15% off a new Minelab product. Told the guy that if you cant fix it, the 15% coupon could be used to wipe a portion of his anatomy' An $1100. machine that was basically used for 1 year may not be able to be repaired?

'Splained to him that if not repairable, there would never be a Minelab product in my home again.
