Yeah you can see he had fun acting in that role as the crazy tank commender, it really shows through the movie.

Especially his out landish of nowhere dog impressions. "Wuff wuff that my other dog imprssion"

Yepper someone annonymous started the graffiti in I believe the European theater to show that the allies had been thru that area. Then suddenly it showed in the pacific theater also.

You pretty much nailed it. The story I got told it was the name of the inspector of all the equipment for the troops. The troops saw it so much they started writing it everywhere for a bit of fun as a GI thing.

I was in Bougainville Island in the Pacific many years ago and inside an old pill box fortifications overgrown in the jungle and lo and behold I found Killroy was here written in chalk perhaps written by a GI during the war.
