hi all  Hello
this is my first time posting on this site! Awesome find indeed  Smiley
Just starting this treasure hunt thing... we (the Eaves) are keen geocachers and now looking at buying a metal detector and finding some real treasure here in Cape Town, SA.
not too sure which model we are going to invest in. So far the Garret Ace 250 looks to be a good buy... any thoughts on this?

so excited to get going   Cheesy

Thanks so much for this wonderful platform
cant wait to start logging our finds and getting to know this community

 [detecting

Hi from England and welcome to the world of Metal Detecting.  Before you decide to buy anything pay a visit to your local Detectorist shop and ask to try out the machines on offer, they nearly all have an area to demonstrate their stock.  I have been detecting since the early '90s, and have had quite a few different machines, some top of the range at that time.  Unfortunately because of my job involving shift work I had to put the hobby on one side for a number of years but last year the old machines have been taken down from the loft and dusted off.  Of course now there are far more technical products on the market and I found it very difficult to choose a new one in the middle price bracket.  Finally I bought a Garrett Ace 250 and I can assure you you will not be disappointed in it's performance on land and on beaches. It is easy to understand the different features and for myself personally being an old Silver Top very light to handle making it most comfortable on long days out.  Don't take my word for it though, do as I suggest and visit your local outlet but I do give that particular machine full marks for results and simplicity.
Good hunting, Garrettman

Thanks so much for all the replies.
Garretman I would love to be able to simply pop into a metal detector shop but here is South Africa they really dont seem to exist! Im trying to do all my research on the net and then will try my luck at ebay. funny enough the Garret Ace 250 was on the top of my list but after reading some of the posts on

I ended up unsure. I live at the coast (Cape Town) and will definitely be doing my fair share of beach trawling so it is a must to have a beach compatible machine. The last thing I want is to end up being frustrated.
On the other hand I am a student and so my pockets are shallow...
the Ace 250 seems to be the best rated in its price range.

Oh dear. A little more research to do before I settle I think.

All the very best anyway, hope one of the suppliers sees an opening in SA and sets up a store.  There must be a real opportunity in Cape Town.

Hello, The Eaves, and welcome to THunting.com.

The Garrett 250 has a very good reputation.  Whether it is better than the comparable Whites, Tesoros and Fishers is in large part a matter of personal preferences.   If you have't bought the 250, though, you might want to check out the brand new 350 first.

(and I suppose best to reply there)
basically after some research its seems the ACE 250 may not be right so:
Fisher F75 ltd
or Minelab SE Pro

need one that will be easy for beginner on beach and land.
