Detecting Hey guys and gals!  Just signed up and hope that I can get some pointers on how to do some metal detecting.  I have had a lower end Bounty Hunter for some time but now that I am retired I plan on using it more.  I have done SOME hunting already and honestly have only found a few interesting things, however if rusty nails were worth anything I would be a millionaire.  Have some places in mind here in Tennessee to hunt so wish me good luck.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Howdy Colonel C.   Welcome to THunting.com.   Rusty nails are ......... a rite of passage.   My first suggestion would be to spend some time reading the tips already posted in our Beginners section.  My second suggestion is never let yourself get discouraged (looking at our Today's Finds can help there).   My third suggestion is remember you have friends here----and if you ask questions, we'll generally try to answer them or at least point you in the right direction

Thanks homefire and good hunting!

Thanks Aggie.  I must admit the pics of the various finds does help keep me going plus I have found a few coins and other things.  I also found an old cap gun in the back yard that I had when I was just a kid.  No monetary value but still.  I sure as I progress I will have questions.  For now thanks again and good hunting.

Hi Colonel & welcome, I think finding your old cap gun is nifty. Sometimes you just have to get all the old nails & trash out of the way so you can detect the area. It helps to detect where you think there is a high possibility of coins being found, too. I found mainly trash in my yard, but found old coins nearer the sidewalk. Sue

Thanks for the welcome Bomber.  It was really great but I had one find that was even better but I wasn't using a metal detector.  I promise what I am about to relate to you guys and gals is the absolute truth.  45 or so years ago my Dad loaned a neighbor kid his fishing rod.  He used it for some time then Dad called him and ask him to return it.  The neighbor kid said it was locked in his car trunk (59 Chevy as I remember) and he could not get it out.  I guess over time Dad forgot it and it was never returned.  Last year I was in an antique shop in the town next to where I live and saw some old fishing rods in a corner.  I picked one up and sure enough it was my Dad's old rod.  I knew from a mark he had scratched on the metal butt plate of the cork covered handle.  I ask the guy how much and I was more than happy to pay the $5 he ask me for it.

Thanks to Sue and Seldom for my welcome.  Seldom I used to live in Garland and Plano so I have a little Texas in me to.  Sue glad to see the ladies get in on treasure hunting.  I think my wife is going to enjoy our outings also.  It has rained here and been cold the last few days but I am going to try to do some hunting with my detector tomorrow.  Thanks to all and hope to be checking in with a big find soon.

Colonel, great tale about spotting your dad's rod. I think detecting is a nice outdoorsy hobby that all members of the family can enjoy. A detector was my idea and my husband frowned a bit . . . .  at first Smiley

Hello and Welcome from Middle Tennessee.
Great places to hunt are any old farm fields with permission of course,
As Tennessee was virtually covered with CW troops either in Battle or encampments or just traveling thru.
Old Schools and Abandoned homes etc.

Good Luck
Karl
