Hi Andries, Welcome to the forum - nice to have you aboard! Retired police - bet you'll love detecting - you probably already have a keen eye and experience finding things. How about buying a detector online? I'm only saying that as there would be more to choose from possibly. Are you going to detect for gold? Sue

Hi Andries,
so you live near a beach good one, next you want a good machine to find coins and gold rings.  You may find most of them in the water where they are lost because the laws of physics heat expands cold contracts. Bearing that in mind and the fact that your body loses its heat 24-25 times faster in water than it does on land a persons fingers shrink and off pops a goodie without their knowledge.
The beach is like a giant xmas pudding that gets replenished every summer when people go in the water.
Now you have a choice of what type machine your going to invest in.  Pulse Induction are proven to be the best for working salt water because they are unaffected by black mineralised sands and salt.
I use the Fisher Impulse and swear by its sensitivity and good find rate. Incidentally I did every target because even small targets could be a gold ring.  There are other manufacturers who make good P.I.s too such as whites, garrett and many more.
Then you have Fishers CZ 20, 21 series of detectors these have a proven track record and another thing about Fisher products is they have a 5 year guarantee and are exceptionally well built and the way they contsruct the control box is brilliant.
Then of course theres the minelab range but theres plenty of choice out there for you to chose from remember its your hard earned cash your going to invest in a machine thats going to suit you. Once you but a machine learn to master it and listen to what its telling you. Read my article who dares wins in the beach section I learnt the hard way with no one to teach me, I just passed on what I learnt putting in all the good things and leaving out the mistakes I learn along the way.
I hope that helps good luck and hope you find the information usefull.  lets know how you get on regards alan

Hi Andries,

 Welcome

I have spotted some cheap (R600) detectors selling at Yebo electronics a few months ago - but I don't think they would be any good ? maybe just for kids. I don't have the details but I have heard of an agent for Minelab detectors operating in cape town.

Cheers

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the response. I was quite overwhelmed with the response that I received from the members. Thank you to Alan, Simon, Xeronium for the information which I appreciate.

Simon I am interested in the Garrett ACE 250. Could you possibly provide me with more information about this metal detector? It is more or less within my budget. Would I be able to use it on beaches as well as inland?

I will stay in contact.

Regards

Hmm i bet any PI would beat the daylights out of that machine even an old second hand one such as a surfmaster any day.
Those that use Pulse induction know it would too.  Its ok for lazy people who want to use VLFs but they will never have the find rate of a good PI in salt water conditions I proved that with a Sovereign many years ago when Minelab refused to take up the challenged I offered them.  They would of lost anyway they knew their toys were only toys and could not compete with a good PI.
While Im at it I might as well tell you about the leaks on the faulty seals of the excaliburs and how many had to be returned to the factory after flooding.
Yes they did flood and it cost a packet to get the dammed things repaired much to the owners dismay.
There was one forum who swore by them, they would because they were selling the rubbish.
Then they came up with a theory about how submarines never leak ha ha ha submarines have a crew to fix leaks where are you going to put tiny men inside an excalibur should such an event occur.
Horses for course detectors for land detectors for the beach you cant have one that does both except the ones i wrote about and Garret Ace wasnt mentioned.   Your choice your money dont blame me if you buy a bummer.
its a shame I am unable to find my picture of the 21 gold rings found in one day with a PI otherwise I would put it up here when I do find it I intend to do just that.  You cant beat the power of PI in salt water or where black mineralised sands exist.
I took a whites spectrum to Bali it couldnt handle the mineralised volcanic soils and sand there. The PIs reigned supreme.
