Go Up Go Down

Hi everybody,

I am really enjoying all the forum topics and emails, especially  the back and forth conversations.  It's nice to see folks disagreeing on topics in such a constructive and friendly fashion.  I'm going to build my first metal detector and it probably be a Bandido.  My concern is that I live close to Lake Washington and I intend to work the beaches  all around  it.   Will a Bandido be confused by all the Magnetite  and black sand known to be on the Western shores.  Will it be able to penetrate these sands or am I better off with a PI type detector?

Thanks.

Welcome from New Mexico.

 Great

Not sure about that Bandito on the beach.

I would think it would do the dry sands for sure.

Welcome from Australia!

If you are certain to be finding black sand where you hunt, look into building a Pulse Induction (PI) machine both for simplicity and ease of use on beaches. Don't confuse sand that is black with black sand. Decomposing vegetation often causes black patches of sand while black sand is a specific type of oxide. Decomposing vegetation is unlikely to affect a detector while black sand sounds like a very soft patch of metal.

Hello Homefire,

Thanks for the welcome.  I was in fact thinking Bandido just for the dry sand use.  A PI now sounds more useful overall, and I would like to (someday) take advantage of the sand disruption at the water line when we have storms and  high tides.

Also, have you heard of anyone using the DIY Coil Coupled Operation Metal Detector from Thomas Scarborough at

Don't waste your time. It works but is very fiddly. Go with the PI kit being sold by a member here. Search for the name Silverdog.
