I am in mid-michigan as well.  It's disappointing to hear about the slim pickings that are left here.  Hopefully there is still enough left out there for us beginners.

Welcome from another Michigander Obie1!

Jay, don't let Spooky scare you off.   He was exaggerating a bit (plus the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence).   Even if the eastern side of the state has been pounded really hard, not every inch of it has been covered (one reason to get permission to hunt private property and sites where buildings have just been torn down is that they may not be hunted nearly as much as say the parks)......PLUS, people are STILL losing money and other valuables....AND people are still hiding their valuables (if anything, that particular habit increases as the health of the economy decreases).  It just means you have to work smarter and harder.   We can't help you work harder, but if you study the past and current posts on this site, you'll definitely learn to work smarter.

I guess that DID come off that way, lol....

Basically to clarify.

I wouldn't count on finding ANY silver in parks or other public places..
There was a lot of "cherrypicking".
But apart from that, the finds are out there, you just have to be 'original"
(Personally I think it's more rewarding to WORK at it)

You can still find a LOT of clad, and pickings are good on private property.

I am new to this forum as well and am from South Haven, MI.  I have been MD'ing for a little over a year now.  Silver is hard to find anywhere it appears, unless you can find a private residence that will let you detect.  MD'ing was strong everywhere in the 70's and 80's.  We have alot of them in this area these days.  I am checking out a field tomorrow where there was an old house that was torn down.  Preliminary check showed signs of old broken glass and pottery.  Hoping to find some nice goodies here.   Detecting Grin

Thanks for the links.  They were actually quite informative and got the ol' gears turning.  Once I get a detector, I've got some good spots in mind to detect.  Just hope I can get permission to hunt there.

You may or may not have enjoyed history in school, but I'll tell you the more time you spend reading what the old timers have written about your area and the more time you spend reading old newspapers and studying old maps of the area when you can't hunt, the more likely you are to find the really good spots.......and that applies no matter where you are hunting.

So when you ask permission to hunt private spots what is the common response that people tell you? There are a lot of areas where I live that would be prime, but just want to know what the most common response could be. I know people are different, but alot of the older homes are well kept as you would imagine. Even though I/we can make a dig look untouched, I think people would be scared that the lawn would be damaged. Anyone ever cut a cable line while hunting private? And if so, how did that turn out for you?

I have success about 75% of the time..
I laid out some "how to" info in the first link I posted.

DON'T say "dig"
 Shocked

Say "metal detect", and be prepared to show them that you know how to recover a target without killing the grass.

The first is always the hardest.   When the neighbors see how respectful you were of Mr Jones' property, they'll be more likely to say yes to you.
