G'day Monkey's Girl,

we're neighbours it seems.  I live and chase the yellow stuff in the Rushworth region.  I occasionally get out to Tarnagulla and Moliagul when I need a change of scenery.  But I suppose whipstick and ironbark looks the same wherever you are.

I'm still working with a 2200D, convinced that I am that it can't be beaten - although I know there are plenty who'd debate that point with me.  Good luck in the bush.

Regards

Forester

G'day Goldnboy,
best time of the year without doubt would have to be the winter, or colder part of the year.  Camping in the forests is permissable here - provided good sense is shown re fireplaces etc - but not in the 'national parks' which at this time are 'no go' areas.  This could change with the arrival of the new coalition Victorian government which seems to be keen to roll back most of the garbage the 'Greens' were pushing.  The colder months means fewer mozzies, fewer snakes to settle down inside one's tent and a generally more comfortable time in which to prospect.

At the moment it's heating up to the humidity level which - as far as this old fart is concerned - means less time I can spend chaining or generally specking my favourite spots.  However, having had my whinge I'm happy to report that I have a week set by for detecting starting tomorrow morning - and hot or not I'm going to be out there.

Regards

Forester

  GDay Forester
Good luck with your detecting, and lets hope its not too hot and humid! You can allways take a layer off. So do you start earlie with the hot weather or have some stratergy's for that?
Best of luck and let us know how you get on  Cool

G'day again 'Goldenboy',

thanks for the reply but taking another level off is not the answer - unless you have a good mate with a front end loader with a blade and you have the permission to 'push' a few metres of topsoil to get to the rock bottom where the gold lies waiting for us detecorists.

I appreciate your interest in the topic - and I must admit that I wasted years detecting over thick layers of overburden when the gold lay metres beneath on the rock bottom.  So this is where I prospect - and this is why in this region I explore deep gullies - particularly now that we've had such torrential rains here in Victoria which have almost certainly washed gold deposits from the gulley banks into the washaways.

Best of luck mate - keep going with it.

Yes Goldenboy,

sorry, I missed part of your query - but yes at the moment down here in Victoria (not the hottest part of Oz) we're inundated with floods and locust swarms which makes road travel increasingly difficult.  And, yes its hot and humid - which didn't stop me and Roo (the ever faithful Labrador) from going bush for a few hours this morning.  The total finds this day were about ten .22 bullets, about nine .22 cartridge cases, five slugs of lead (which sound oh so bloody similar to the gold we're looking for) and a Victorian penny coin.

Apart from that, I enjoyed myself.  What more could you ask for?

Regards

Forester

At least you can take comfort in the knowledge that those floods are rearranging and re-cutting the gulleys bringing previously inaccessible nuggets within reach when the waters do recede.

She hasn't been here since October 2009 having been sort of put off by an amorous approach by a new user who thought this was a dating board.

Fair enough, Gold-digger, and who can blame her?

However I feel that the miscreant was firmly put in his place by the moderater and other members. If 'Monkey's Girl' reads this, then perhaps she could be pursuaded to return to the forum and submit reports of her prospecting and her opinions in general, particularly as they represent the feminine angle.  My wife also loves to camp in the bush - though not an active prospector -  and takes great interest in every (unfortunately miniscule) piece of the good yellow which I unearth.  She values a necklace beneath which swings one of the first nuggets I found at nearby Tarnagulla.  There are many women out there in the Australian scrub who find plenty of gold and have no reluctance to get dirt beneath their fingernails.  Their place in the prospecting world is respected and we value their opinions.

Regards
Forester
