Hi everybody,

I'm finally going to get started within a few weeks.  I have a few spots lined up.  A friend is going to show me where he found a 1790 Spanish coin in Chalmette, La. near the Chalmette Battlefield.  I bought some books a good while back, but they are so vague.  Jean Lafitte supposedly buried treasure in the Honey Island swamp, which I believe is about an area of 25 square miles.  With my luck, I would probably find the Honey Island Swamp Monster. I live in southern part of Louisiana.  There are a few old forts but no luck as Fort Pike and Fort McComb never actually saw any action.  I was just piddiling around there, I really wasn't familiar with my Garrett Ace 250 then and now have a pin pointer.

Any tips on the Ace 250 appreciated or tips on good general areas on where to start would also be appreciated. Of course I'm not asking for exact locations, just general ideas. Detecting

Howdy from Arizona.   Yeah, most books you read out there are going to be very general and/or very misleading.  You need to look for more original source material.   That means reading OLD newspapers, old diaries and journals, and the obscure little local histories written by the old timers (or that are collections of interviews of old timers).   And don't expect them to say Old man Smith buried a chest of silver up cedar creek a mile and a quarter north of his house.   But you might read how Old Man Smith always paid cash for everything, but when he died they only found enough money in his house to bury him and pay his widow's way to their son's place.   Then you figure out from old land records and newspapers where Old man Smith lived.

In the meantime while you're working all that see if you can figure out where the church revivals and baptisms were held and where folks used to race their prized horses.   Those are the kind of places you'll find lost pocket change and jewelry

Hello, and Welcome from Utah! I have the Ace 350, and I think it just has a couple more bells & whistles more than the 250. I've heard a lot of positive things about the 250, and that's why I bought the 350 knowing that just 80 bucks more would still get me a good rig. What I've read from others in the forum - is just go out there an practice! Go to your local city park, and get started for a few hours, dig up a few hand fuls of clad and get an idea of how it responds (audibly) with the different metal types and how the display looks to you.
Be sure to post your new discoveries in the 'Today's Finds' thread with pictures too!
