does the coil cover have to stay on all the time Embarrassed :Smiley

Welcome aboard Scott
Yep it's a good idea to keep the coil cover on when using your machine. You will soon realize that the skid cover will be a lot more affordable then a new coil.Protect that coil.A good idea, when cleaning your machine take the skid cover off and clean the coil and the inside of the skid cover.Moisture, dirt and anything else your coil was into and picked up sometimes get trapped between the coil and the skid cover and this could give off false signals.I know some people fix their covers permanent with waterproof glues or caulks, but myself I wouldn't suggest that.....  Smiley

Not too sure about gold but works great on silver. I found the back of a ear ring at 4" which I thought was pretty decent. The smaller coils work better for me on the smaller items and don't lose much depth. HH Warren

If you need a pinpointer, check out Harbor Freight , i bought one a few years ago for 14.95 and it works great, i even picked up a small gold earing in the sand that kept falling thru my scoop. I would buy another one for that price and it still works fine...Good Luck....DW
