Hello, Scott.

      Welcome to THunting.com.
Tip #1 read the manual at least twice.
Tip #2 take the detector out in the yard and use it for a while and make mental notes on how it responds to different items you laid on the ground
Tip #3 use the detector on another part of the yard where you haven't "planted" anything and see what you come up with.  When you get a signal take notes of both the signal and the item.
Tip #4 go back to the manual and see if the manual makes any more sense than it did the first couple of times you read it (it probably will).
Tip #5 use your detector as frequently as you possibly can
Tip #6 read past postings on this websites, especially those in the Beginners section or that deal with the Garrett 250 or a specific subject that interest you.
Tip #7 there are a whole lot of very helpful videos on the web of people using the 250.   Watch them and learn from them, but don't take them as gospel until you try the techniques yourself.

The machine will go crazy and show a coin at 6-8" if it is on the surface. The 10x14 coil is a great addition and adds a good 2" of depth over the 9x12 Proformance. I have used this machine for over a year and love it but you will need headphones with a volume control or hearing aids later in life cause this machine is pretty loud. If you detect in damp soil or wet sand you will have to run the discrimination down pretty low or it will give false readings. Hope you enjoy the machine and HH.   Warren

Use the cover when you are detecting in areas that would scratch or otherwise damage the coil shell. (rocks, gravel, coarse sand)
Can't wait to see your first finds! Smiley
