Well, for trash, like cans, and once I dug up a car reflector Smiley They were about 11-12 inches in the ground. For the good stuff, like the 1846 LG Cent, it was only in the ground about 6 inches.

Well 11-12 inches is good depth. The most I ever detected with my Garrett is about 9 inches. Smiley

Hay Ken,

I can detect aluminum cans at 12 inches easy. If
the car reflector has as much over all conductivity,
I should be able to detect that deep as well.

I use Tesoro machines. I had a Garrett GTAx 500. It
would air test real good, but never got much depth
in real ground.

Strange that you can not get much depth on an
aluminum can. Lots of people complain about
digging a foot, only to find a can.

Which Garrett do you use?

Happy Huntin,

Tabdog

Tabdog, I use the Garrett Master Hunter CX. It's the older version but not much has changed. Maybe the soil I am digging in has some effect. If the target is beyond 8 or 9 inches, I don't get any response (if I use the headphones I get readings that are erratic and incomprehensible. The soil where I am doing most of my detecting now is highly mineralized and it's giving me fits. Angry  Angry

What do you suggest? Thanks,
Ken

Another newbie from northern Ohio here. Found this sight through Twitter. Mostly hitting parks and fields and have found a few cheap rings and lots of clad but nothing real exciting so far. Waiting for a little rain to soften up the hard clay around here.

Will be looking forward to learning a lot from this site!

Bob
