Thanks for the welcome guys.  Its always nice to be new to a community and be so welcomed.  That just doesn't happen with many forums these days.

Welcome Rebel Smiley

La Grande is one of my favorite camping spots. Ever been to the mines above Hilgard State Park? Also there is an old logging town named Woodley which is gone now up in that area, might be fun to detect.

Let me know if you are interested I'll get you directions.

Idaho I'm very interested!  I was actually thinking about hitting up Hilgard here soon to test out my metal detector a little better.  Cool

I would love some info on the mines and  logging town.  I remember finding an old logging camp when I was little but I have no clue where it is now.

If you are ever out here and interested in some fossil hunting let me know and I can give you some good spots up around the John Day area and the like.

I'm actually heading to Idaho this Sunday to do a photography job.

Cool deal Idaho.  My girl friend told me she knows some places where she use to go camping with her dad (he is a gold miner) that is near some old mines and there were quite a few piles of rock and debris left from when the mines were active.

Welcome,  Go to garage sales and hit the books first thing.  Get those old Karl von Mueller hand books on Treasure Hunting, none better.  Also look for a book by Harold Wilkins  or Wilkerson on THing.  Can't remember the name of the book but someone here on the forum will know it.  That book will get your motor running but good.  You can actually metal detect anywhere and have fun.  I once found a meteorite in a vacant lot so treasure is where you find it...and it is everywhere.  Also found a three toed dinosaur foot print in solid rock near Paulina Oregon back when I was a kid.  Don't be in a hurry to get a new detector, that Compass will teach you a few things and besides if you are more interested in finding Gold, then some detectors are better at it than others.  Read and then ask questions here to learn more.  Good luck.
