New guy from Oregon

Hey everyone new guy here from eastern Oregon, La Grande to be exact.  I have grown up in the Pacific Northwest spending most of my time in Oregon on the west side of the state.  Ever since I was little I would go hiking and camping and spent tons of time outdoors.  I remember always wanting to hunt for treasure, then again what kid didn't?  So of course I grew up loving movies like Indiana Jones and the Goonies.  I spent many years going out with my dad and his metal detector, though he would only take me to parks and the like with it.  He had also had the treasure hunting bug from a young age and had hunted for gold quite a bit.

I then settled down into life into the suburbs of Portland worked in an office for 10 years, grew a belly and stopped thinking about treasure hunting for the most part.  Then a couple years ago I moved out to the eastern side of the state to return to college at EOU.  Since being there I have gone on several fossil hunting trips and I actually work in two paleontology labs at my school (the only person aside from the profs to work in either lab).  That has started getting my juices flowing for treasure hunting again.  It also help that my girlfriends family owns a gold mine claim out here so she has a bit of that adventurous streak in her.  We are hoping to go do a few short trips this summer if we can figure out some good locations near by, which there should be. 

Oh also I recently dug out of storage my dads old Compass Gold Star 1000 metal detector and it still works.  I remember he got it recalibrated a few years ago.  I put batteries in and it fired right up I'm going to test it today around the property, even have a couple gold nuggets to test with.

Anyway I'm happy to join the community and I can't wait to learn as much as possible.  If anyone has any tips and pointers I will gladly listen.
