Hi everyone

I 'm just getting started in detecting, looking t purchase a decent unit in the next few weeks. I have read as much as I could about detecting on the internet and decided to join this forum for some advice.

My detector knowledge is based on what I see on the numerous internet sites. It seems a bit hard to make an educated purchase without being able to "test drive" the unit. I would be able to spend $300-400 on a detector. It would be used primarily for coins/relics/rings a few hours a week. I am not searching for gold nuggets or taking into the water.

My question to you experts...
1. Is buying a used detector a good idea?
2. Are these fancy screens or displays on the units necessary or just an added cost?
3. Base on my use (coins/relics), what 2 or 3 models are the best "bang for th buck?"

I live in Bloomington, Illinois.

Thanks in advance for your advice

Hey, Jeff, welcome to the forum.

Buying used is a good idea if you are buying from a reputable source or if you have someone who knows detectors coaching you, otherwise it can be a lot like buying your first car.
In your price range, you'll be unlikely to find a minelab (except used at a yard sale, estate sale, or pawnshop), so I'd concentrate on White's, Garrett's, Tesoros, Fishers, and Teknetics.
If you're looking for new, the Garrett Ace 250 has an outstanding reputation among it's users.   And we're hearing good things about the Teknetics Delta.   Tesoros are also extremely reliable machines that often get over looked.
As far as old versus new, the older Garrett and White's machines were made to last.  A lot of long time detectorists swear by the older models....the biggest problem being that they tend to be heavier than the newer ones and tend to be battery hogs.  But the top of the line models from a 10 to 15 years ago have the depth to keep up with the new detectors in your price range.  (And a lot of folks find it easier to hunt by ear with an old analog model than a new digital model)

BA
