yes, paying for an extra bag isn't fun....which is why I like using one of the rolling duffel bags with the split (preferably rigid) bottom section such as these

The detector(s) and my snorkel gear go in the drop bottom with a bit of padding. The clothes and various other items go in the top (conveniently providing an extra margin of cushioning. Going with a light detector like the Fisher F4 or the Garrett Ace 350 and a maximum of 2 coils (standard and sniper), it's pretty easy to stay under the weight limits even packing for a two week stay in Hawaii.
