Knowing where you are in North Carolina will help us give you some ideas (although the best place to start is in the library learning the history of the area---especially read the local history books--they'll give you all kinds of leads). Since you didn't say where you are, we'll assume you're in the vicinity of Camp Lejuene until you tell us otherwise.
Given all the pirate activity (not to mention the civil war blockade running) anywhere along the coast or the outer banks should be good hunting. If you want quality gemstones and raw gold, you'll need to head deep inland into western NC, but they have excellent specimens that bring a very pretty penny.
