Unfortunately Sue, my farmer friend is never going to plough the field again as he is stopping farming (no money in it he says) and he is going to concentrate on his holiday business instead. I might never know the extent of the treasures that lie beneath his soil.  Sad

Timax50, this may sound really simple but why don't you just compress the stalks by stepping on them as you walk? I've detected many a cornfield that way after harvest.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

HI GD
Firstly because the detector head protrudes a lot further than my stride so I would technically have to  walk backwards to achieve the result you suggest, secondly the corn stubble is on average 6 inches high and bounces right back when trodden on and thirdly the field is also interspersed with tall thistle and weed (it makes for unpleasurable detecting) Sad
