Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505

Hi guys,

I just joined this forum today and was looking for some advice. Has anyone here searched for coins in Huntington Beach, CA? I have heard so many rumors on permits needed, parks being off limits or limited access, historical sites, etc. I literally am receiving my 1st MD today (Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505) and want to get some help before I set out. I mostly want to shoot coins, but with the Newland House being across the street with a big lot behind it on a sloping hill and small water basin, I thought it might be a good place to look, as long as I don't get into any trouble. I want to do things by the book, does anyone have any experience in the area? The beach is a given, I just want to know if anyone has any experience with the area and advice to give. I also saw a park that looks promising (Lake Park) but it has a small park house that was declared a local historical landmark, so not sure if the whole park is off limits. Once again, any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Barrett

Hi Barrett,

Welcome from Arizona.   The problem is the laws vary widely from state to state, county to county, and city to city (actually it's a good thing otherwise everyone would probably go by the most restrictive laws).   Fortunately you can usually find the rules and regulation on line by looking at the website for the government the city or county that runs the park (or the park website in the case of state parks).   Or better yet, if there is a Park Administrator or Chief Ranger for that particular park, ask them---sometimes they'll say yes when other people interpret the vague rules as "no"....and if they give you any specific areas that you can either hunt in or that you need to stay away from make sure you follow those rules to the letter.  (AND NEVER FORGET TO FILL YOUR HOLES.....you want it to look better than it did when you started).

Great news. I am assuming that since a metal detector is not a voice or music amplification device I will be fine! Can't wait to get off work and home to start getting familiar with the MD. Any more advice concerning the So Cal area would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Barrett

Better a pop-top than a needle.    Here's a tip you may have already read, but keep a bag to put all of your junk finds in.  Then keep another pocket or pouch for the "interesting" but not valuable things (like toy cars or fishing lures).   The stuff in those two bags are what you're going to show people if they insist on seeing what you've found.  And when you leave, it doesn't hurt to have people see you disposing of the junk in a responsible manner.  The good stuff needs to go in a separate pouch or two behind the others that they can't see (and that they can't see you put anything in).   There are people out there that think they're entitled to what you find... don't play into their games (and hopefully you won't run into them).
