Welcome from the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon.   Wise   Try your local library.  Askl the librarian about what you are looking for.  Request books about local history and lost and buried treasures of Alabama.  Also, this forum is overflowing with information.  Enjoy!  Detecting

Hello Woody.   Welcome from Arizona.    Homefire is correct....checkout the discussions in legendary treasures to see the kind of questions we ask when confronted with a possible lead or a legend.   As for sources of legends, you'll find them in just about any library.   BUT if you want to research a story that might actually pay-off, skip the "Treasure Legends" and focus on the old newspapers looking for stories of people who either suddenly came into a lot of money or suddenly lost a lot of money.   Less competition and more likely to be true.

hey woody, i'm lee.  new member but experienced hiker, camper, explorer.
there are many potential sites in north alabama.  de soto came through here, desota state park named after him, visited little river canyon stayed a long time.  some kids close to rome, ga found a sword determined to be from his expedition and awarded to them by the courts.  'trail of tears' route close by and even probably in your own backyard where groups were 'rounded up' that's putting it nicely.  there are tales of 'way bills' made by some indians who expected to come back from oklahoma and wanted to pass along buried treasure info to descendants, mostly not believed or followed up on.  many rock formations still carry the carvings and directions if you can decipher.  i've looked at some in my northeast ala area for many years.  very interesting.  to me the art of the carvings, etchings, sculptures and shapings have been a source of endless enjoyment.  recently retired, so maybe now i can look further.  if you go to u tube and look for 'some rocks of ages by lee battles' these are some of the ones i refer to.  have many others. hope you enjoy but please be careful, especially this time of year.  rattlesnakes are out and plentiful.  i recently went to a seminar at desota state park near fort payne, and was immediately put off by a comment made by a young park ranger when asked, "...i see the rattlesnake hides and pictures on display,  are there any copperheads around?" genius replied, "...no, most poisionous snakes around here are in churches..." needless to say i was through with any information i might have gleaned from them.
good luck

Hey everyone, thanks for the input and valuable info.  Wise It is greatly appreciated! I have been working every day now for a month now  Sad so I have not been able to do much. Hopefully I will be slowing down soon so I can begin researching a carving I found at Cherokee Rock Village. I know several people who have seen the carving but don't know where or who it came from. Also, in three weeks I am going to Panama City Beach, FL. I bought a new submersible metal detector and have been itching to test it out. Detecting Hopefully, with a little luck I might find some thing that's worth while. Well got to run, thanks again for any the info!  Cool

I used to live in Southern AL and i know Blakeley(sp?) Park is an old civil war zone with lots of ghost stories and whatnot. Could probably find some stuff there. But that's along the Mobile Bay/Gulf Coast area. The Eastern part. I dis-advise ever stepping foot into Mobile city itself, because it's dangerous even in broad daylight. I used to always carry a knife on me when i went to Mobile, AL.

Hi Lee, this is woody. Thanks for the info. I live about 30 min. from Cherokee Rock Village. Have u ever heard of it? I know of a carving on a boulder there. It is hidden in a group of large boulders down in a hole so to speak. you have to climb over several of them just to get to it. It has intrigued me for some time now. When my work slows down some i plan on going back to it for more clues to what it is. i wonder what the carving is doing there in such a hidden place where no one can see it. I plan to take some paper and charcoal so i can rub the image. maybe i will be able to make some since of it eventually. I will let u know if i learn anything else. when i get a pic of it I will put it on here so u can see what u think about it. till next time, keep on hunting.  Waveing
