Go Up Go Down

Hi all!! My user name is LkyEgl, but all of my friends call me Eagle.

My late wife bought me my first metal detector for Christmas of 1969. Unfortunately, my first trip to the beach in FL, I had incredible luck, and have never been the same since. Kiss
I hit a 100ft strip of storm washed beach, (on AnnaMaria Island,) and filled my pocket with silver coins. as I returned to the beginning of that strip, I got a fair signal on my BountyHunter and dug up a sterling babies ring with a pearl setting. It had been buried so long that a couple of layers of pearl had been worn off. About 5ft further, I got another strong signal, and at about 5in, dug a 18k ring with a 1.5ct emerald setting.

All of that gave me THE FEVER. Then of course, when I returned to CA, I had to expand my little hobby and got into dredging. As wierd as it may sound, the first time out with my new 6in "stove pipe", (underwater dredge,) I took about 5 minutes to dredge through a couple foot of sand, right down on top of a 2 pennyweight nugget wedged in a crack. So, not only did I have the detectors fever, but I got bit by the gold bug.

It didn't take long for all of that to evolve into searching for lost mines. I had the fever so bad, all it took was a rumor of a lost mine to put me in search mode. But, it's not all bad, I have found several old forgotten mines, including one that I am sure was worked by the Spanish, long before CA was explored by anyone else. And, best of all, I've picked up years of experience that I couldn't have learned at the Colorado University of Mining and Geology.

I hope that I can contribute helpful information to Thunting that will lessen the task of learning for other members. I'm always open for questions.

HH to all, Eagle

Welcome from Perth in Australia. Stand by for a few minutes while we make a space here big enough for you. It won't take long. We just have to move a few chests full of treasure out of the spare room next to the library.

Now where did I put that dolly?

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I should have mentioned, in 1969 there weren't as many detector nuts as there are now. Come to think of it, I never saw another person with a detector up until about 1980. (Or there-a-bouts.) I wouldn't have wanted a detector so early if I hadn't read about Spanish gold being found at Sebastian Inlet. THAT was the beginning of my wish-list. :Smiley

At the moment, photobucket, I'm getting ready to replace the engine in my Explorer 4X4. Then I'm thinking about some buried mining tools I found in about 1989. (That was long before I became interested in artifacts.) I wouldn't bother going back to recheck the area, but I found them by accident during a period of not having a metal detector. Oh.........! Plus the fact that they were stamped with the initials: CSA. How's that for a CA find??
