Smiley Hello everyone. I am a total Noob to the hobby, but I've got stars in my eyes and am willing to learn all that I can!
First question where do I start?

Well Atom do you have a detector yet? How far are you from the beach? What color is your car?

Welcome from Texas

I'm looking for a detector (1st one) There is a lake in town with a beach and I'm about 45 minutes from the Atlantic ocean. My wife had the idea of getting a Detector and I said "Yeah that's something I've always wanted to do". Now i'm looking for some advice on what gear I'll need to get started.

Welcome, AtomicZ, from the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon!   Welcome  Get a detector is the first thing.  Lots of recommendations on this forum.  Then you have to learn how and what the detector is telling you.  That includes reading the manual and instructions several times and practice, practice, practice with the detector!  You will dig up a lot of trash, tinfoil, pulltabs, iron, etc., etc., etcetera!  But...  you will learn your machine and you will begin finding good stuff, too.  It takes patience and practice.  But once you start finding the good stuff you will have a ball!   Good luck!                  Detecting

Atom look at the Tesoro sand shark or if you want to start with something a little more inexpensive look at their silver max or the Garrett Ace 250.

Welcome from Arizona......A good place to start is by reading previous threads on our "Beginner" board...that and reading your instruction manual a few times and then getting out and swinging the detector (followed by coming back in and reading the manual one more time so that the stuff you experienced while you were in the field starts to make sense).

ok so i found a cheapo detector somone was seliing for $20. Ends up it's a harborfreight 9 function cheapo md. Read the manual and went out ib the yard for some testing. Found 3 beer cans, 3 aluminum can tabs, a capri sun package and an old hot wheels car (1984). Planning on getting more practice.

Hello Atomicz and Welcome from Utah!
Congrats on getting your feet wet and jumping into the new hobby. A good step up from that one you got would be a Garrett Ace 250 (I have the 350 model), then you can go up from there once you get the hang of it. You get any decent finds feel free to post the stories and pictures on the 'todays finds' part of the forum. As Bitburg mentioned.. lots of information on here all over the place to answer your questions for sure!
Post a pic of that hotwheels!  Grin
