The chance detector relies on a low capacitance coil for fast responses. I wonder how a coil with ideal capacitance would perform, like a bifilar arrangement.

Nikola Tesla's patent for improvements in electromagnetic coils indicates that such a coil can have no opposition aside from ohmic resistance.

patent
: "permits a current of given frequency and potential to pass through it with no other opposition than that of ohmic resistance". Self-induction is neutralized.

The potential downside of bifilar coils is the capacitance. Though it should naturally be at the ideal value for any given coil. Potential difference is half of the supply voltage between any adjacent windings.

I believe when there is negligible self-induction, the inter winding capacitance might not be a problem. Perhaps such a coil can be used for a fast Pi, it's simple to wind.

Greetings,

I bought a Quasar ARM controller from ebay.  I saw on one of the packages from the full detector model listed and it said VLF tester on the box.  However, in the title of this post, it looks like it is a pulse detector.  My display and model looks exactly like the photo.  Is it VLF or pulse detector?  Or is it both?

Regards,
krazdigger

I've looked up Quasar ARM detectors, and they are VLF. The Double-D coil design gives it away, though it's possible to use DD coils for both VLF and PI detectors.
There's no mention of pulse induction capabilities in the listings I found

Thank you,

I also bought a Clone PI AVR.  It is a pulse detector and has no discriminator, but can quickly dig everything because its in constant pinpoint mode. With the round search coil you can easily tell the shape of the target.
It also has a deep search pattern. I use this detector to clear out an area of trash then use my detectors with descriminator.  However, this PI detector cannot detect the little bit of gold nuggets or little vile of gold powder.
My Garrett AT Max detects both.  The PI detector Freq. is 7.5 kHz, is that why it does not detect the gold?
