Goldfields surrender 'nice' big nugget
December 20, 2006

A GOLD fossicker in Central Victoria has found himself an impressive early Christmas present, unearthing a nugget tipping the scales at nearly 3? kilograms.

The Central Goldfields Visitor Information Centre's co-ordinator, Anne Senior, said the fossicker had named the nugget "Slugger". She said the man, who did not want to be named, had been looking in the area for some time, and had brought the nugget into the centre to show staff. "It was absolutely beautiful - nice and shiny and gold, obviously," she said.

"The man said that to a collector it would be worth about $150,000 but for the actual gold content it was around $100,000."

The nugget, reported to weigh about 123 ounces (3489 grams) and found near Maryborough, is believed to be one of the largest unearthed in the Central Goldfields Shire in recent months.

"People are finding quite a bit of gold around but you just hear the rumours when someone finds a big one," Ms Senior said.

"No one wants any one else knowing or finding out about it, obviously for good reason."

Thanks Sue for another interesting link.

These  nuggets are somewhat typical of what they find in Australia and that's why they put the American goldfields to shame.

My guess is it was found with the latest Minelab gold machine- the GP-4000. Everytime they come out with a new model - it reopens all the old goldfields since they go deeper then the previous models.

Steve

WOW!  Talk about ticklin' my gold-bone...WOW WOW WOW.

Thanks ORO for color correcting it...  I got to hold a 20# from ole Griz outta Arizona who took folks to Aussie Land on trips to find that stuff.  He let me hold it while someone took a pictures.

Turns out there was no film in the camera...so only me, the person taking the pix, and Griz knows I actually held that gorgeous goober.

Thanks again, Sweet Sue!
