The kid gloves are off. I've re-panned a few loads and found no color. Am satisfied that my panning skills do the Batpan proper justice, and I proceeded to be extremely aggressive. No more gentle panning.....just fast and furious (but thorough) stratification with most vigorous washing of lighter material, stopping just shy of slopping water/material out of the pan. Gravity, fluid dynamics, the pan's design and the natural propensity of gold wanting to settle down low are our best friends!

Attached is a photo of 2 specks of color circled in red, next to the eye of a needle for scale. The Batpan did not let these very small bits slip through. I'm now confident that I can run many test-samples very fast and accurately with this device.

I hope those of you who purchased a Batpan enjoy using it as I have! Wink

A strong permanent magnet in a plastic pill bottle or film can will remove the black sand from your pan where the magnets are weaker. Shake the magnet away from the pan afterwards and the black sand falls off.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Great minds think alike.

I have a old plastic film can  I put a Neodymium Magnet in. You have to fill it with water or like a Cork it is.  Chuck it in the Pan before you load it and let it do it's thing.    I don't worry about any gold that hangs up in the Black sand because I save it by the bucket  and do other things with that.

Here's a pic of the 10lb pull magnet I use. Fits into a 35mm film can. Easy to rig a shaft and thumb-ring and use it like a syringe, with the magnet being the "piston" part, and the film can being the cylinder. Lift up thumb and the black sands fall off.

Halide Leach.  Easy Clean and takes a bit of time.

If there is gold within the back sands, some of it is rubbed into the black sands.

My Batpan and grizzly arrived today. That was quick. Looks good. Now until I can make a trip to the local NE gold fields will have to find some stuff to practice with.

Yup...was at that site reading about clorox as a (low concentration) source of halides etc. It really is a wealth of info, but I had to download the site and convert the color of the text. Red text on black background is a bit hard on my eyes.

Been also pondering the diamagnetic properties of gold. So far that factor seems to have only been applied to enhance recovery rates in froth floatation techniques. Would be nice if one day some clever chap found a way to excite the gold particles and amplify the diamagnetism. Imagine a diamagnetic sluice where all the gold particles pop up and are simply vacuumed away! Cheesy

Congrats! Suggest you familiarize yourself with the pan by running a few loads of sand with small ball bearings or birdshot chucked in. Won't take long for you to master it, I'm sure! Then when you hit the goldfields, you'd have the technique down pat.
I've seen gold "paydirt" being sold on ebay, but I'm not too sure about those deals. Got a feeling that buyers will be getting far far less value in gold than what they paid for, plus postage.
