i know what you mean  i saw a show about a guy in north carolina that found a gemstone  emerald or ruby  on of em any way he started a mine there i noticed when the camera panned back you could see a shadow of a guy with m16/a.r. 15 /m4  standing there and as they panned out of the scene sure enough  there was a guy standing by the hole  with one of the above mentioned assault rifles  guarding the miner as he  was diggin with a backhoe  LOL! I thought man i wouldn't want to wander lost into those too  a guy might get lead poisoned .

One of the biggest pitfalls of a new miner is not understanding your equipment before hitting the field. You can use an old lead tire weight and shave off a few pieces into a baggie of dirt. Get a pan of water and pan out the dirt. If you keep all the lead you would have kept all the gold. Same with sluices and dredges, know what you are doing before you cart it all the way to the goldfield Smiley good hunting

That shaving lead is a great ideas to test my sluice and drywasher. I built a couple out of boredom and hopes I can do some back yard prospecting before I buy a commercial made one. Building was easy, getting em to work another problem. Practice, practice, practice.

Yea, I never understood why they had a shop vac hooked up, or how the air made it worked. I didn't put a hopper or a bellows in my dry washer, wanna guess what happened. My sluice and Dry Washer are sections so I can change them out and go wet/dry or any configuration I want. I actually got the sluice right first time running.

But ty for the birdshot idea. I just don't keep guns around the house, the neighbors might think I'm rich and break in.

Birdshot is easier to count too, and you want to count em before you start. Smiley I do like to use some small really small flakes though just to see if I am losing much fines. Once you have had a little success you can use some of your findings to test new equipment and it's almost like finding new gold when the yellow shows up   Grin
