Being sure the Ground is open to claim.   Hard to keep up with the paper work.

By the time you determine the ground is open, the next day someone could have filed on it.

Water.  Or Lack there of.

Heat in the Summers and Cold or Flash Floods in the Winters.

Piles of Tribulations to face some times.

 Great

Digging on someone else's Claim can land you in DEEP DO DO!

Private Properties, You better have a Letter of Understanding or Permission in your pocket.

State lands are a No No without Permits.

Forestry Lands if not Claimed if Open to Claim.    Most have been Withdrawn from Locatable Lands.

Yep, lot's to look out for and be aware of.

Gold Rush is the worst show on TV right now. Those guys are idiots and they are misrepresenting the world of recreational prospectors. The only reason their little Cluster (add explitive) will work for them is because ther have ratings to fall back on. Besides that little rant... I believe there are place available to you in the midwest, however, I am not familiar with them. A good start is a gold pan and a 2 mesh sieve (it is meant to be fun, not profitable). Any claim owner in their right mind is not going to cause a ruccus over someone with a pan. Second google "(your state) prospecting club" and see what turns up. If that fails, check with the GPAA. The GPAA has some great offers for beginners in that they will send you videos on panning and all of the supplies you need to get started panning. Clubs are great in that you can make some great friends which ultimately straightens your learning curve a bit.

Cheers

Sean

Yep!  I've contacted Many a Claim owners and requested permission to Pan, Dry Wash.

Once in a while you run across a Grump.

Most just take your name, Address and E-mail a permission Slip.  Ha Kinda like school, Eaaaa?

All most ask is for you to inform them What you found and Were!   Just doing there sampling for them Ya Know!

Cover all Holes and Leave NO MESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL!   Emmmm I mean Don't Laugh.

BLM lands claimed or not are Multi Use lands.

You can Fish, Hunt, Camp out, and do any other activities allowed on BLM Lands even on a Placer Claim.

Some Claim Owners sorta forget that.

NASTY, NASTY they can get.
