Other than pounding the rock into fine grains and panning out the gold, is there some faster way to get an idea of the gold content?

Scratch that. Gonna pay a lab to do a fire assay with lead glass flux.

Thanks Au, it's a good an informative video but the SG route's not applicable here as the matrix is rather inconsistent and the flakes of gold are tiny (as per the photo in the "Tests" thread).

On a slight tangent, in the past Homefire had recommended the fire assay method for a lump of unknown metal I had found. I didn't listen to him and hastily went the quicker route using x-ray fluoroscopy. It was very inaccurate. Luckily I didn't toss out that lump (and others similar to it) because it turned out to contain much more than XRF showed. Hobbyist learned a valuable lesson here: listen to the wisdom of the experienced ones , and don't be rushed. I only remembered that after starting this thread; sometimes me brain's like a sieve and I'm angry at myself for having momentarily forgotten that. It's the fire assay route for these rocks.

LOL! I've tossed out a pile of gold just because I could not see it in the rock.  OH, it was there.

That's why the Falcon MD-20 can be such a valuable tool to have, Homefire. I really must seriously look into getting one if this patch of rock proves to be worthwhile. And I'm gonna try my utmost not to let yr advice lapse from my brain again.

It's (The Falcon)  a really simple detector.     More like a pin pointer.

It's the frequency that does the job.

This Falcon sounds interesting/? any more info's.

Specific gravity test is for if you have a specimen and want to know how much gold in your rock.

SG tests for gold content will not work with matrices which have several kinds of rock conglomerated into it.
