Still need some more voters... like to get a general idea of fitness level before starting people out on something.

Alright, to make a minimal useage of expensive equipment, I think this program should work well.
I am a firm believer in lifting to failure, that just means you do one set until you can't perform another. Usually you try to find a weight that will make you fail between 8 and 12 reps. Here is what I think will work for most. Rest 30 seconds between reps and don't change resistance. For cheap you can get some resistance bands from wal mart or some other source. Search youtube for resistance band exercises or, just the exercises I put in the program. Work three days a week without working consecutive days. Be sure and do some sort of warm-up, something to get the blood flowing.

Body Squats- 2 sets to failure
Forearm Curls- 2 sets to failure
Front Arm Raise- 2 sets to failure
Lateral Raise- 2 sets to failure
Curls- 2 sets to failure
Elevated Push-up- 2 sets to failure
Elevated Close Grip Push-up- 2 sets to failure
10 minutes of walking to burn some calories and cool down.

How about some good exercises for the shoulders and back.  That's what bothers me most when I'm out there panning and sluicing.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Push ups are a staple to the art of manliness... like knowing how to prepare fresh lobster or how to throw are proper jab and hook!

Go Up Go Down

I prefer splitting wood, carrying the wood to the fireplace, then burning the wood and sitting close. Thats my winter workout Smiley

Sean you should be careful, if none of us keel over in the woods we won't need those handy EMTs Cheesy

A good point though, I do agree that sedentary habits lead to sore backs and decreased productivity and potentially lethal consequences.

A couple 3 years ago my son and I went to the hills on a fishing trip planning to hike into a high mountain lake. I had been there before and knew the first mile of the trail was a semi vertical climb. Long story short we did several things wrong. Drove late into the night, slept little, ate little, and got to the destination at mid-morning when the heat was coming on. We ate a sandwich and headed up. I have asthma issues and got a little winded keeping up with a 20 year old, didn't stop and actually passed out for a few seconds. It was the first time I ever failed at something like that, and was a wake up call that I'm not as young as I once was. If it wasn't for my son I would likely have taken a thousand foot tumble.

Some of the things I try to do to stay more fit now.
I always walk to lunch from work, and around the block if it's nice enough.
Split a little wood every day.
Work out with hand weights a few times a week. (more than 12oz Homefire Smiley although I like those too!) Also keeps the hands tough so no shovel blisters!
Toss the duck for my chessie dog. It's amazing how many muscles that works. Plus it's good for her too.
Stretching is good too, it doesn't take cardio so you can work on it every day for less than 5 minutes and feel results. That helps with all the bending over for panning. Smiley

Splitting wood is quite the intense workout. I don't have the opportunity to split through the winter, but I always find time to help a friend out on that one. I tend to split at least 3 cords per year... I figure it is a win-win, he gets to rest the weary bones, and I get to burn off some steam.

Cheers

Sean

No one seems to like to do em, but deadlifts with a barbell or dumbbell (could probably even use resistance bands) would be a great exercise to add if the equipment is available.
