Cyanide is the result of that, Homefire. Must be very careful.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Done Right (LIKE MOST PROCESSES)   You can dump the waste down the drain as a Inert Product.

No Cyanide is Produced or Used.

I got awful tired of using the mortar and pestle as was illustrated in the video and what I do now is use a propane stove and a cast iron skillet to heat my black sands up and then I toss them into cold water to fracture them and release the gold.

Here in Arizona I have often gotten mercury out of places in the Bradshaw Mountains and in the Goldfield Mountains. Especially when using suckers on bedrock crevices.  I do not understand how there can be so much mercury in the crevices and such when I have a problem with it evaporating out of the plastic bottles when I store the mercury in my shed.

I have seen many wondrous and wild home made machines for crushing ore, but the best ones IMHO are the homemade hydraulic stamp mills and ball mills.  I have lots of steel balls gathered around here and one day I will have myself one of those ball mills as well.

Thanks to everyone for the tips!  They are much appreciated.

Grin No cyanide soup for me, thanks. I will eat solid food as long as I still can.

If you look at black sands under a microscope you can see the gold attached to the magnetite if it is magnetite from a placer area and not already processed. Magnetite does precipitate gold out of the atmosphere. Gold and other PGM series metals are in a mono-atomic state in water and the atmosphere. Read about ORMES. For some reason the pyramidal structure of magnetite converts the mono-atomic gold to a lower state. A friend has some large magnetite claims and he has been processing the magnetite and getting 1-5 ounces of gold from the magnetite. I have seen his gold recovery.

There are other methods besides mercury and cynanide to recover gold.

At far as the mercury method on copper collecting the fine gold the Homestake in Lead South Dakota used this method at one time. My dad worked in that mine and he told of the process. They would dry these large copper plates, coat the plates with mercury, then run the slurry of ground ore over the plates. Then they would shut off the slurry input and a sweeper would sweep up the mercury from the plates and they would process the amalgamated gold and mercury mix and recover gold and mercury in a separation process. The mercury would be reused. Dad said there would be a spongy ball of amalgam about 6-8 inches in diameter that would be sent to the separation processing.
