Homefire, are you directing that at me? If so, you are using the term incorrectly.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Looks folks, that is exactly what should not happen: Making a new member decide to leave of a ridicilous discussion of terms. People come here to either share or ask for information but they shouldn't be treated like little children by a teacher.

Harold, I am very sorry and hope that you will reconsider. I would like to see you stay.

Thanks for the link about Dahlonega mining.  I learned a few things about my town that I wasn't aware of.  Ironically I live only about 1/2 mile from the head of the Yahoola/Cane's creek ditch.  There's not hardly anything left to see now... It's all been reclaimed by mother nature... but gold is still around.  Hydraulic mining was prevalent here in the mid to late 1800's, but honestly you can't find any evidence of it now.

I'm sure it's different for geographic locations, but around here, the term highbank mining is more like the small bank side sluices that was decribed earlier.  Drag the water up a hill and use it to wash sand back to the stream.  Hydraulic mining is the term used around here for blasting the sides of mountains away with water cannons, and it has been outlawed for a hundred years or more now.
