Go Up Go Down

I purchased this thing called a Hydrofuge back in the mid-90s but did not use it very much as I was mostly into metal detecting when I lived in Northern California. I have been down here in San Diego County where the gold is very small to fine and I started using this thing with great success. The company seemed to have gone out of business and the injection molds are probably in somebody's garage. Does anyone know anything about this thing? I was toying around with making a new mold to make some more for myself and possibly sell some on eBay. Anybody have any feedback or suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Interesting. Looks something like I imagined from the name, spinning water   Grin sort of a mini highbanker looks like.

Never run into the critter that I can recall. Probably just someones idea that never took off. I'd check the bottom for a patent number or anything before I made more just in case.

Does it work well?

Thanks for the imput. It works incredible for fine gold! You just dump classified dirt into it and, at the end of the day, dump it into a panning machine and away you go. Unlike highbankers and sluices, it does not have riffles to plug up, so you never lose any gold and you can run all day. The only drawback is that it needs water and lots of it. As far as a patent goes, there are absolutely no markings on it whatsoever.

I'm thinking this would fit nice on the end of my gravity dredge and be very backpackable for some of my out of the way places.

The cyclone effect carries away light material and all you have left in the bottom is heavies right? Neat idea.

Keep us updated if you decide to make some.

That is the idea. It really makes a racket if small nuggets are in there! It is plastic so it weighs almost nothing. I run it off a small battery and a solar panel, so it is totally portable. Mine is a bit small and I was thinking of working with a plastics company to make a bigger one. I will post it if/when I make more; I'm a bit short on money right now. Need to get back out in the desert if it ever cools off.

Here's a good place to try your device. Go to the very end of Dog Beach in Old Ocean Beach where the canal runs into the ocean. Use a pan there and you'll turn up a gram of gold in no time. Every year during the spring thaw, that canal becomes a raging torrent and brings fresh gold from a 1000 mile or more confluence of creeks in the Rockies. Give it a go. I guarantee gold.
