Go Up Go Down

I'm not to sure what they were mining at the time. i found the small town's little trash heap and dug there for a bit, and there were quite a few pieces of coal, however those could have been the remnants of what they used in their stoves for all we know.  i was researching mining in that area and found out that there was a mine nearby there and back in the 18 or 1900's there were a bunch of immigrant miners that were sitting back to back in this mine passing kegs of black powder over there own head, to the next guy in the line that they were sitting back to back with and they extended the chain of people as far as the twelve or thirteen of them could go, to prepare for a detonation.

Well, one of the miners lost his grip and the keg fell to the floor of the mine and exploded and the force detonated the other kegs they had loaded into the mine.  the blast worked like a gun barrel and blew them out in a shot gun effect, scattering pieces of them all over the side of the opposing hill.  interesting what you'll find with a little research.

Black powder will not go off by dropping it.

Sounds like a folk story to me.

Funny but not likely to happen!

Hi Toleary

I some how don't think that they would have been mining with black powder useless stuff compered to dynamite and dynamite can explode if dropped but only if it is old dynamite you see dynamite is really nitroglycerin mixed to a fine powder then rolled in waxed paper with a fuse in it. Nito is a highly unstable explosive it is made from nitric acid and glycerin and is sensitive to heat and shock now when dynamite is old it starts to sweat and those droplets are pure Nitro drop a box of old dynamite and you have one big BANG.There were lots of accidents with old dynamite in the mines so it's very possible that it was dynamite but not black powder.

Go Up Go Down

there is a mine down by my cabin called the castlegate  mine.  in 1924 they had an explosion that killed 173 men, this was a coal dust explosion if i remember correctly, and it was kind of the same thing.  there were people literally blown across the canyon from the force fo the blast.  but what i want to find is an old ore car that was used for hauling the coal.  the force of the explosion threw it onto the other side of the canyon and it's somewhere up on the hill there.  if you are ever down by helper or price, Utah, check out the Western Mining and Railroad Museum, they have a lot of good history there and can tell you about all the mining accidents in the area

Yeah , sounds like a coal mine explosion to me . Coal mines are dangerous things even today . Methane gas is a constant problem in some coal mines  . 29 coal mines were killed in the south island of New Zealand 6 weeks ago and their bodies are still in there as its too dangerous to go in . If the methane levels build up they are easily ignited which then ignites the fine coal dust in the mine that covers everything and floats in the air . These explosions are horrendous as the mine acts like a gun barrel effect.
There's a push these days for multiple entry mines so that miners have a chance of getting escaping in such an event . In NZ it was a single entry mine with only 1 way in or out .
