Hello,

I found the following rock sample and was wondering if anyone out there can tell me more about it. Is the sample in fact platinum or some other mineral like silver. Look at the splats on the rocks towards the end of the following video.

Is it easy to fracture yet very heavy? is the host rock a silver color? If so it might be galena.

Nope not easy to fracture and the host rock is darker in color.

best bet is to have it assayed. Good luck with the find.

You can't even tell us the general location ? I understand not wanting anyone to know where it exactly came from but a general location would go a long way. If it was found in Hawaii or say Great Britain I'd say no. If it was found in Russia or South Africa or even a mountainous region, I'd say chances are better.

It was found in British Columbia in a mountainous region.

a easy test to find if it is platinium is to get some nitric acid and put a sample of the silver metal into nitric acid if it disolves its not platinium, nitric acid will not disolve gold or platinium. if in doubt after you do this test and you want a confirmation have it assayed. hope this helps! let us know!

Specific gravity.  Platinum at 21.5 is almost twice as heavy as Rhodium at 12.41.  Of course you'll need to get a fair amount of the metal out of the rock to get anything close to an accurate specific gravity measurement, but that's the way an assayor is going to do it anyway unless you want to go to the expense of a chemical analysis.

Bigwater, specific gravity is only one part of what an assayer will tell you. Assayers do much more with a sample than a simple SG test. New electronic testing is instantaneous and the most modern use no chemistry at all. I sent some samples by overnight delivery and got a reply e-mail stating they'd been signed for at 2:15pm (from the courier). By 3:00pm, I got another with the assay results (from the assayer). The speed of things these days just blows me away. Remember waiting weeks for results?

EDITED: I should add that this rapid analysis of metal content and SG was for flakes in the ore sample only. The actual assay of the material as a yield per ton assay took a lot longer. Had the first test been a false alarm, the second probably would not have been done. But, as you might know, gold is really hard to mistake. Even iron pyrite - fools gold - only fools someone who has never seen gold.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
