I'm going to build a portable classifier table. I kind of want it an all purpose deal. I am thinking about using a

Rubbermaid 48 gallon packer
. I figure to break it down and store the parts in it. Along with what other digging needs that fit. Four legs and not very tall probably about 3 foot high. I want to be able to sit on a 5 gallon bucket shaking it. I have been thinking about a double decker. And having about three different hole sizes which I can use at either level. Sometimes just use the top level and other times both. Also using pre-drilled aluminum angle for the cross pieces so I can just lay the classifiers in them. I am going to pick up a boat sump pump to use when I want a water wash and just drop in the container. Has any body used a double decker and would it restrict wobbling it too much? Any other things I need to look at?

Used the Three level type that Garret makes to fit in a 5gl bucket.

I was thinking of something larger. Where I could shovel and my wife could shake the table.

I would think it would be easier to do big lots in batches.

That I've done.

1/2 inch down to 1/4 inch down to 1/32.

Just do each batch in a box and shovel to the next.

If you tried to do them stacked up your going to have to separate it at some point.

I am thinking about getting stacking classifiers and I may end up getting some for more back country stuff. But like the next shorter gem trip we are planning it will mainly be road cuts and creek beds next to the road. And being able to just dig and shake with weight support my wife would really appreciate. Last time we were gold panning my wife had a pretty hard time with her back. We also could go through a lot more material. And gold panning use the packer or maybe get one of the cement mixing tubs to catch the small stuff for our sluice. We were not prepared last time. I spotted something pretty close to what I'm trying to build using 3 legs. Another thought would be a rigid frame with the screens suspended by rope or chain. I've seen them hung from trees, but this next spot nothing but mesquite and junipers.

In Houston Texas. Not a whole lot of mineral stuff around until you get past San Antonio and Austin. There is stuff for metal detectors around here because of the history. Petrified wood in a lot of places close by. Wooly mammoth and bison bones along the coast. Cretaceous fossils, shark teeth, other marine fossils pretty wide range. There is some gold toward Llano just have not tried it yet.

About the only gold you might find around here is a ring or something.

A single shovel full of rocks is quite heavy. Several shovels full might make the shaking unmanageable even for a strong person if you make it too big.

Why not let gravity do the work and build it at an angle like the professional units? Dump your aggregate into the frame near the top and swipe it downward with the shovel to the next layer which then allows the smaller stuff to make it to the third layer and so forth. Your fines can then be collected in a bucket for processing and you can inspect the screens for larger nuggets in stages after you disassemble your classifier stack.
