Has anyone chanced across deposits of the minerals Tantalite and Columbite while detecting? If you've come across them before, what make and model detector was used and what kind of returned signal was shown? Thanks!

Tantalite has been found in Namibia, Nigeria, Canada, Madagascar, northern Europe, and Maine, California, Colorado and Virginia in the United States. Brazil has the world's largest reserve of tantalite (52.1%).[3] As at 2006, 75% of world tantalite production comes from Australia.[3]

Tantalite is also mined in Guain?a and Vichada, Colombia.

Tantalite is used as an ore of tantalum and niobium and as mineral specimens and occurs in pegmatites. Some specimens may show a bluish iridescent tarnish and have demonstrated weak magnetism.

Tantalite is largely found mixed with columbite in an ore called coltan.

Some user experiences in detecting tantalite would be nice. Anyone?

it's extremely rare and hard to find to begin with, and I am sure the place's it is found and mined are Pvt Property, so the chances that someone finds any with a Metal Detector are going to be extremely rare also.

Good Luck though.

Thanks Karl...I knew it was a long shot in asking, but hope springs eternal eh? Smiley I'll be buying a specimen to see how it reacts with my detectors.

That was going to be my Question.

Will a detector repond to it? Huh?

Well, it's a metal, homefire; my guess is that a metal detector will respond to it. Am wonder HOW a detector will respond to it though...and what frequencies are best for locating it. The main impetus for me opening up this thread is that some ppl have chanced across a few deposits of the stuff, and it's worth money. I'd like to find some too!

Yes Homie it should , However this stuff is usually mined, so i kinda doubt there would be much thats going to be close enough to the surface for a MD to pick up , and its extremly rare, according to the map there is just 3 places in the lower 48 u can even find this stuff, and a just a hand full of places around the whole world.

You can pan it and dredge it from creeks in areas where it is found. They look something like pea sized or so magnetite, iron pyrite, and such and are very numerous when found. I started saveing them just in case the price goes up again.
