I've been wondering where a person can go in the United States to look for gold. I heard there are places wherea person could pay and pan in the river or use a metal detector. Think it would be a lot of fun.

Near Lime Oregon there used to be a place but I believe the GPAA bought it. I have also heard of places back east doing pay for panning. Joining a local or national club or organization might give you a listing of nearby sites. Generally looking for gold is easiest to find where it was found historically. Look for old mining areas nearby, just keep watch for active claims.

Where are you located, or plan on traveling?  I know of a few places in AZ to pan that are restricted to only panning.  They are fun to pan and you are pretty much guaranteed to find gold.

if you are on the east coast, there are several pay to pan/dig/sluice/dredge sites around in the mountain regions.  north ga, al, nc, etc.  some of these have websites such as the crisson mine, alabama gold camp, there are several others i just cant remember the names.
i live about 30 miles south of knoxville, tn and i dont have any mountains in my back yard, but i have found a few flakes in the creeks less than a mile from my house. my thinking is that if you have a creek or stream nearby there is probably a little gold in there.  maybe it wont be enough to retire on, but it is still exciting to see the flash from a tiny flake in the pan close to home.  hope this helps....

Vacman,  your question is kind of a hard one to answer.   The first answer is that you look for gold where gold has been found, but that covers a far bigger area than most people think.   It would help to know where you are and how far you're willing to go, and where you're already planning on going.   There are pay sites around.....some of them are real good and some not so good.   There are even a few places where anyone can do recreational gold panning for nothing (but those are very few).

Give us a little more information, and we may be able to give you more in return.

Come down to New Zealand's South Island. The government has set aside gold fossicking areas
to enable anyone to prospect for gold, free. what you find you keep.
The only rules are no mechanical devices, it has to be done by hand, and sluice boxes are not longer than 1meter and wider than 200mm (about 3ft x 8") and only in the river beds, not the river banks.
A friend of mine retired to one of the old gold towns about 4 hours away from here, and has often said i should go visit and try my luck. he often goes detecting around the old town , but has never said if he's struck it rich!   Wink
I must get serious and go spend some time in the old gold fields one day soon.
