Sylvie, the first order of business is establishing ownership of the site. If on public land, make sure it isn't a protected or heritage site. On private land, get permission.
Secondly, before you go you need to establish if the land has been plowed or if it has been re-landscaped. Probably not but it does pay to check. Next is a trip to the library. Napoleon was a strange man. He had artists along to capture his battles in great detail while in great peril. There might be a few pictures of your site to give you ideas about the placement and position of troops.
Battles tended to be a lot less organized than they are in the planning. Afterwards, the soldiers from both sides would wander about and dispose of the dead and remove the injured. Lost objects could be just anywhere.
Enjoy yourself and get back to us when you find some things.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.
