I haven't heard about such a fish but it wouldn't surprise me. I mostly fish fresh water, inland lakes and streams, so catch and release are still important to me. Fresh water fish don't come in schools of a thousand or more like blues or skipjacks. The tend to be the solo "granddadies" when they get big. Mine was just over 13 pounds and I had a hard time getting him into the boat for taking the hook out. He swam away much slower than I expected.

When I harm a fish too much for him to survive, he becomes dinner. Or if I'm out hiking/camping without food along, they all become dinner.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

As I understand it; the fish was taken into the US from South East Asia and it is slowly working it into the fresh water systems of the States.

Just checked my sources and it would appear that there are two fish launching a major pincer attack on US fresh water systems.

1 The Asian Carp, that can grow to be seven foot long and weigh 100llb.
2 The Northern Snakehead, that will eat all in it's path.

Some states have a $200.00 bounty on snake heads now.   They make a Northern Pike look like a Gold fish!

WOW! 200 dollars a fish! That sounds like a real money spinner.  Shocked

The little mystery of the small metallic cones is finally solved.  Wink

They are the inner tip of a copper jacketed projectile off a British mark VII .303 bullet.

Ok so i went back through the whole post. The original pic shows a projectile tip.
Not a fishing weight . But glad you finally found out.  I was out of pocket for a while  back then.
So what other interesting finds have you found there?

Go Up Go Down

Small pieces of WWII fighter aircraft that crashed there, an old shipwreck, a gold ring, some old silver jewellery, and thousands of .303, .30, 50cal, and 20mm projectiles. The area was used as a air to ground target range by the RAF and USAF during WWII. Oh and a fair number of decimal and pre-decimal coins.

Most detectorists avoid this beach like the plague, due to the high concentrations of WWII scrap hiding in the sands, but if one is patient and determined better things do turn up. I recently invested in a Nel Snake Coil for my MineLab Safari and it's helping to get in between the scrap, but large copper jacket fragments from 50cal projectiles keep fooling the machine into thinking that they are coins.

your diagram shows the cone as being aluminum ahead of a truncated lead and antimony core.
