Hello All

Here is a story dating back to 1933.

The Following newspaper story tells of search for the shipwreck of a British vessel called the Britania was wrecked off a sand bank in Osseol now called Saaremaa Estonia in 1783 carrying a huge amount of gold. 7.5 million in 1783 figures or 1933 figures it still would add up to a serious amount of money. Strange enough nothing was ever followed up in the papers about the search?

Was they successful or did WW2 intervene and story of the lost gold of the Britania was lost to history? And perhaps the communist era after the war did not give the chance for anyone to salvage the gold?

The site of the alleged shipwreck lies on a south western peninsular on land on the island of Osseol that has a long finger of sand bank stretching out into the Baltic like some submerged finger of death waiting to catch unwary victims in storms.

Perhaps one such victims was the Britania with a fortune in gold waiting for those daring to seek.

Hardluck

Hello Poseidon-Jim

I wonder what the salvage laws are like in Estonia?

If it hit a sandbar, wouldn't it most likely be in fairly shallow water? Looks like the Estonia Salvage company would have salvaged. Even with the different countries laying claim, human nature would have prevailed. Of course, I guess with the tides, hurricanes, and such of hundreds of years it could have shifted into a lot deeper waters.
