Actually....

If you find a meteorite it has little or no value to collectors, until it has been tested and classified by an acredited university/laboratory.

They will only test a fragment if you include GPS coords of where you found it.

If its found on ANY forest/government/state/city property they have dibs, smithsonian has the rights to all meteorites found on federal/government lands including national forests and parks, and if theyre not interested then it belongs to the finder.

So if you ever find a meteorite and want it to have value, be sure the GPS coordinates are in your backyard or on land that YOU own... Wink

Thanks, I've been planning a trip to Florida right after Thanksgiving and have been looking for just this type of info.   Most of what I've been able to find seems either out of date or inadequate.

I dont often post on here but enjoy the US-centric postings.

YOU GUYS STILL THINK YOU LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE  Huh??

Over here on the other side of the Pond we had Government types & Archaeologists and unelected turds in boil-in-the-bag suits trying the same trick with random finds.
They assumed that if it wasn't nailed down or if it was shiny, then it was theirs by right.

Now we have a thing called "PORTABLE ANTIQUITIES LEGISLATION" which actively promoted detector users to report stuff to local Museums/County Archaeologists and get a fair hearing about their finds.
If it turns out to be valuable or the County or even National Museum want a hoard or a stash or part of a hoard or stash then they have to pay a fair price for it to the finder/landowner ( who sould have the usual 50/50 split agreement signed between themselves.)
The fair price is set quarterly by an Inquest being held and experts from a wide range are on the "Jury" and their reasonings are published and available to all.

I am happy to post up on here links to this legislation which is only a coupla pages and might help if you guys over there who currently have bother getting some a****oles thinking put back in line.

Remember the Brits taught some of you all about knives and forks and things like that, and we reckon some of you still use 'em to this day, but when it comes to Authorities stealing stuff for personal enrichment then we will happily supply ammo and cover yer backs while you go a-huntin' justice for detector users all over.

--Finally I aint a Brit--I am Irish--just living here because of women & work & kids and all that stuff and I have it in my blood to disjoint some fancy-pants archaeologists who is an ingot or two short of a stash... if you follow my drift?Huh?

Come back!!

Largebear........Good article, makes more sense than what's going on over here (USA) in some
places..  Some places in Va.. that are under Gov. Wildlife Refuge programs you can be arrested for just stepping out of your boat and walking on the beach.. I'm in my fifties and have seen a continual decline in personal freedom and the quest to live a life free from continued government interference. We need laws, but there has to be a line drawn somewhere.  John in Va

The way things look, to me, with all the conversation, going on here, Canada may see an influx of refug.... er.... new citizens coming from the US.  Shocked

Much more so than during the Vietnam-draft-dodger days.  Grin

I still remember my (stoned) neighbour, in North Vancouver, turning all the big rocks, looking for his stash!  Grin

Sorry. I did not and never have used stuff you would stash, and at that time, I was a security person, and only an interested onlooker. I think all he found was centipedes.

How is your stash? How about the Captains stash?? It is over-rated, I prefer Red Rose or Hedley Ceylon.

Try again, next time.  Grin

The programmer remains hidden from me. It has now made it to the top of my "To Do" list because it has been there so long! LoL

I have some cleaning to do in my storage shed and as soon as I get it in my hands, it goes in the mail to you, mate. A promise is a promise.

IF you have cleaning to do, you probably are, like me, a life-time member of the procrastinators society!

If that is the case, you may never get that cleaning done.... this is why I am looking for a 14 - 16 foot holiday trailer... to MOVE all my electronics OUT, and set up a Ham shack, along with some antennas. I cannot have antennas, in the house, because that means drilling holes, which can have a number of bad effects. With a trailer, I can make a panel, with soft foam insulation, to handle all kinds of wire.

Wait a minute while I turn my scanner down.  Shocked

Go Up Go Down

I read the rulings of the State of Florida regarding ther isolated finds law and they said they discontinued it because there were only a few people that actually reported their finds. Now, do you think everybody else has discontinued searching for artifacts over 50 years old? Of course not! Now, everything that they find is NEVER reported to the state. Its the worst legislation ever passed by a state. What Florida needs to do is adopt the same laws as England and compensate the treasure hunters for what they find.
Here is the story about a poor guy that GAVE an arrowhead to someone:

matt, i've been reading your board for some time now and posted a few times, this topic about isolated finds is one i've been following for some time. i have a very good friend that lost his job week before last for owning an arrowhead (yes, owning) and giving it to, what he though was a school teacher. heres the short story.

<<<<<<<Smokey, here is a long story short. About 5 months ago I recieved an email from someone named Whit inquiring about an arrowhead I had for sale on eBay. She claimed she was a 4th grade school teacher from the Orlando area that was doing a school project on native americans and wanted to learn more about arrowheads etc and wanted some info on one I had up for auction. I told her not to bid on any as I would give her 1 to help her with her project.

She kept emailing me for several months asking me to take her kayaking so she could see how I did it and kept asking about a few points I had on eBay for sale which I once again told her please don't bid as I would be very happy to just give her one. A few more weeks whet by and the Spirit of the Suwannee show was coming up and I invited her to come up and I would show her around and introduce her to some other of my fellow collectors. She came up and I showed her around, noticing she kept asking me how you tell the difference between a land find and a water find but never thinking twice about it.
Couple more weeks go by and she calls saying her boss had given her half a day off and she could come up and get a point. I told her just drive to my house and I would show her my collection and find a point that would work for her. She brought over a very nice project board and a text book she said she was using to teach the class. I gave her a very nice point, one I had turned down offers to sale because I really thought I was doing something nice. She seemed really happy and went on her way...two weeks later I was arrested at work and fired on the spot, issued a search warrent on my house to which they took my computer, kayak, every artifact book I had and my entire collection of artifacts that took me 15 years to aquire as well as my bottle collection. The 'teacher" was and under cover agent of the DEP and was wired at the show as well as at my house. Getting me on tape telling her what beach the arrowhead was found on. I have 5 misdameaner charges as well as 5 felony charges against me right now including the felony charge of trafficking stolen state property for the arrowhead i GAVE her.

I have about lost all faith in our government. Hope this story can help others as well and bring me some help in my case to find these people who think we work for them instead of the other way around. Dave>>>>>>>>>>>
