Sue, thanks for all the info....

What do you know of a ship that went down near Wilmington (more likely Bald Head) in 1804 called the Santa Rosa?? Supposedly it was a Spanish ship that had some treasure going from Havana to Bilboa. There is a mystery surrounding this wreck as the crew might have been suspected of killing the captain and taking control of the ship, only to wreck it on the Cape Fear bar. The crew members were found to be carrying a large amount of money (in gold), but swore that they only recovered a small bit. However, I have never heard of anyone finding anything (not a trace of it).
Ever hear of this one???

Don

Sue,

How do you find out if a ship is a registered Spanish wreck? Is there a source that I can use ( outside of the archives in Seville) ?

Located back in the early 70's by a Southport treasure hunter. The rudder is over at Ft Fisher, I think it is standing in the corner of the small Mariner museum building.  She was/is deep in the Cape Fear River mud off Smith Island (Thats Bald Head Island for those not familiar with her history). A few coins were found I believe, I'll spend some time next week trying to find the old news paper  article, seems it was the Southport Pilot paper.

Thanks for the great story on the El Salvador. I really will be surprised if they have found it, it could be a story for the investors. But, good luck to them.
The Galleon N. S. de Solidad could also still hold treasure although the British and the locals got what they could.
I have got a feeling that a lot more Spanish treasure ships lay off the NC coast. Especially, the very early flotas. A lot of those ships that " were never heard from again" and the fact that some Native Americans of this area have green eyes are very tempting suggestions that they could well be out there.
At this point, I am trying to gather info on a known Spanish wreck around Cape Fear. It occurred in June 1526. Has anyone ever heard of a Spanish settlement in NC called Chicora circa 1520s???

I still think she went down closer to old Corncake Inlet. I did read an artile in a local library book about the search for her in the town of Topsail a number of years back but nothing was found.
