Harris County Texas has rules against metal detectors even having them in the Harris County parks. See section 15  http://www.hctx.net/cmpdocuments/2/park%20rules/rulesregulations.pdf

Houston Texas parks have no rules on metal detecting.

Thanks, ghola.   That's a relatively recent law.   It represents another battle we lost (in part because most of us are too busy to keep up with what's going on in our local, county, and state governments let alone our national government).  Fortunately, such laws can be overturned, but it's a lot more difficult than either getting them passed or stopping them before they are passed.   Need some hobbyists on the council/board of supervisors.

Harris County Texas has pretty much the same as the state rules on metal detectors. One thing to note is cutting a plug in either is forbidden with out express permission. I'm going to add this to homefires list.

I think you're right.   I know Homefire has one going for Mining.  I also think he has one going for general metal detecting, but I'm not sure where it is.   I suggest you send him a PM with the link that way if he has one going he can add it.

In the meantime, it's good to have it here also....this is one of the first places a newbie from the Houston area is going to check.

Thought I originally posted the state laws. But it was Harris county. But the rules are the same. So that was a repeat of the same site. I am going to edit the first post though. Found the Texas Historical Commission's web site.

The "Restricted Cultural Resource Information" is kind of an eye opener. If you want some information on those you have to be screened and approved. You can find a lot of it on the web, but not through the State. At least that's what I think it means.  I hope it doesn't mean you can't tell some one about some site. At least its location.

Oh well can't modify the original post so this will do for now. May post a separate locked one for Texas laws in this forum later with more links. I'll keep adding to this as I spot stuff.

Okay here's the official TWPD site

I googled and found an earlier listing on twpd in research techniques / legal issues.

We don't have a Thread for State/County/City detecting laws.

I my self think it would be best to put them under the States when found.

Every State and City are different.

If you put them in the Law threads there going to get lost in the mix.

Maybe I can do a template like used for the Maps in the Law Board.

Wait a little bit and I'll try to keep adding to this post to get a good list going.

One thing I noticed is what we used to call "Xerox Engineering" in the laws. Just change the engineering to law making.

Austin Texas park rules. xerox of state rules. No md's unless permited.

This is pretty much the standard for cities. And probably should be considered default unless other wise noted.

Some relevant info from site.

1.07 METAL DETECTORS

The use of metal detectors in City parks and wildlife preserves without a permit is prohibited.

1.12 PLANT LIFE

All plant life within the boundaries of any Austin Parks and Recreation Department park facility and wildlife preserve is protected. Patrons shall not willfully mutilate, injure, destroy, thrash, or remove any live tree, shrub, vine, wildflower, grass, sedge, fern, moss lichen, fungus or any other member of the plant kingdom or portion thereof, except upon approval by the Parks and Recreation Department. No person shall collect or harvest dead wood or plants, or portions thereof, except upon written approval. The collecting of pecan nuts on the ground is allowed; the thrashing of pecan trees is prohibited. (Texas Rev. Civ. Statutes 6143.1)

1.13 NATURAL RESOURCES

All sites, objects, buildings, artifacts, implements, and locations of historical, archaeological, geologic, scientific or educational interest of every character located in, on, or under the surface of any park facility and wildlife preserve are protected.

No person may remove, excavate, take, dig into, or destroy any site, object, building, artifact, implement or location of archaeological, geological, scientific or historical interest without having permits as required by the State of Texas Natural Resources Codes, and without having permission of the Parks and Recreation Department.

High lights , Only in designated parks, a 6 month permit is required, no digging tools allowed. See site for more info and permit request.

Boy, some of the cities really hide their codes. Amarillo site search all you get is proposed amendments to park rules, not the actual rules. But City of Amarillo search also does not show any reference to metal detectors. Tried a lot of combinations rules, ordinances, regulations, even the ordinance 12-7 mentioned in some amendments.

Not sure how many I'll get. I am going to try for as many major cities as I can.
