Hey guys I recently found the beautifully looking medallion shown below in a Chicago Park. It has Republique Francaise imprinted, but the c-cedillo (little hook under the c letter in the word Francaise) is missing. Thus it was a token or souvenir probably minted here or in Canada. It is the same on both sides of the big coin (the size of a silver dollar), but upside down respectively. It is not currency and despite much google searches, I have not come across with any information about it. Have any of you seen anything like this?

Interesting find. I hoped I could help - so far, no success. It's a nice large medallion. Odd that it's the same on both sides. Sue

Thanks. An online coin appraiser told me that the coin is indeed French. Yet, I still think it is not.
Thank you for helping guys. I really appreciate your efforts. I was told that the medal is French, but still think it is not. I'll keep searching and keep all of you updated.  Teach

Not every mint is capable of making a coin with the mark (?) that is missing. It's French. You can bet on that.

Like I said earlier, it's probably an exposition token. Start searching for tokens. Most coin dealers don't have a clue about them.

You are right. I now have no doubt the token is French  Clapp. The coin appraiser further commented that it is a very common coin, yet I'm hungry for more info. I think that I'm in this hobby precisely to learn as much as possible about my unusual findings, regardless of their actual monetary value. To know how the token made it to a 1913 park in Chicago could be a too ambitious, but any bit of information may help to infer it. GoldDigger1950 you have been helpful and insightful, and I thank you for your help. Per your previous posting I engaged into an intensive web search Rider for French tokens and medals, although with no success to date. May be one of these days I'll complete my quest. Hopefully it will not take too long  Wise.

Have a look at this Google search result and see what you can find. The Chicago 1893 Columbian Exposition generated a large number of commemorative tokens and France had many companies which were exhibitors.

And, specific to French tokens, here:

One other thing to keep in mind is that yours might have been a test striking for the real token. Most tokens from any fair or exposition have different obverse and reverse sides. Yours has the same image. It may have been a test strike for the obverse. That would make it very, very rare and potentially very valuable. Yes, you need much more research. Finding the answer can be more fun than finding the item. Good luck.

Hey GD I had thought about the strike test, but like you said that is really rare and for now I'll keep looking until I finally decipher the mystery of my French bronze medallion. I'm checking ur suggested sites. Thanks
