I certainly feel you with the trash targets.  I used to never dig up nickel id'ed targets until I came across my first Liberty V nickel in a spot that I knew was good for old stuff.  After that nickel I have dug up all of those kinds of targets and only found trash period.

My detector also id's a whole lot of my fience's gold jewelery as a nickel so I now discriminate the lowest iron id'ed targets and know by the tone that I am hitting a nickel id'ed target.  So far I have only gotten foil and pull tabs but I know that I will start finding gold sooner or later.

I used to only dig up silver or copper ( for the wheaties) hits which would always land me aluminium trash but now I am going for those nickel id'ed targets that will sooner or later get me gold and more nickels.  As long as the target can be pin pointed as a small item and it's id does not jump all over the place I dig it.

Most of the veterans tell me to dig it if it beeps but I have been scouting new places mostly these days and want to make the best use of my time by only digging up decent looking targets.

Keep up the good detective work.  I have been using google earth and comparing the oldest satellite images from the eighties to give me a better hint of how things used to be laid out.l  I have found a few good looking spots so far that I would not have known about without those oldest satellite views.

Good luck to you in the future.

Nice finds there  agent 651. Those nickels are hard to find for me... Its one of the fewest coins I have. Nickels won't sound off on my machine when I hit coin check. Those that I do find are just a lucky dig...My hunting area's sound like yours. Old homes and the like. Trash? I use the smallest coil I have in those areas. It do's help me I think...

i have this same issue and even though i dig everything my nickel count is way low  i tried my bigger coil this evening its a different animal  but shoots a little deeper but trickier to pin point  found some deeper junk though so i  dont think i missed much if anything with the small one  which i use proficiently, now  i am gonna stay with the biggun for a little while longer  it has its good points too i guess i feel it searches  a little more thorough because of the size  if i come up with anything that works better i will share it with you guys . well, keep swingin and dingin  like my buddy Karl says !  later josey

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Those nickels are down there. I have dug out many of them. One day I dug out 21 in one hunt. They get confused with pull tabs and thus I dig all the pulltab signals. Every now and then, I hit the coin. My oldest one so far is a 1939. Still looking for the older ones! I like Jefferson nickels and recently put together a full collection from 1938 thru 2010. Keep trying.  Wink
